Mixed vegetable farm, small orchard and chickens
British Columbia
Hello WWOOFERs, we are a small organic farm in the central Kootenays of beautiful British Columbia. We grow fruits (berries, mixed fruit trees) and vegetables as well as raise chickens for eggs. We specialize in Indigenous food systems and also forage for traditional foods.
We do daily activities on the farm including weeding, harvesting, washing and packing produce for market. I would like to teach WWOOFers how to get ready for market and run a market stall, how to make compost in bulk, how to use compost tea, and how to forest garden as well. On the non-farming side, we have a lot of forest and are cleaning up the forest to create mulch for the garden and for foraging. Chicken care is also a daily task. Keeping the property tidy and welcoming is also a priority.
We have most meals together including lunch and dinner and are looking for someone to participate in shared meals by taking on the meal making a day a two a week. We have lots of farm produce so meals are full and varied. We are not vegetarian but do enjoy vegetarian meals.
The Kootenays is an extraordinary place. There is recreation everywhere. Although we don't play any instruments, there are many locals who do and have open mic sessions. We like to hike and hang out on the local beach on hot summer afternoons. There is plenty of mountain biking around as well. The food scene in Nelson is excellent as is the arts scene so even though this is rural living, we get the best of city life.

I stayed with Naomi and Andre for two weeks in October, and had such an amazing time. They immediately made me feel like part of the family. I learned so much about organic farming, Indigenous food systems, and and the ins and outs of running a farm. Everything from composting, seed saving, harvesting, and preserving, to organizing and selling produce at markets and online. Some of my favourite activities were learning different canning methods and foraging for mushrooms in the forested areas on the farm. The meals were excellent, the accommodations were super comfortable, and I had plenty of free time to explore Nelson and the beautiful surrounding areas. I would highly recommend staying at Dreamcatcher Farm to anyone interested in sustainable agriculture and community living. 1000/10 experience!
