ABOUT THE FARM: Avalon Farm is a beautiful place in Sproat Lake, just outside Port Alberni, BC. Here we have 21 acres of meadows and crops, surrounded by temperate rainforest. Our primary crop is organic blueberries, but we also have organic gardens and hayfields. ABOUT US: We are a married couple, no kids, and we're starting our second year at Avalon; however, the farm has a long history of delivering fresh, delicious, organic blueberries for the past 20 years. The farm is also home to 2 horses, 10 chickens who provide us with delicious eggs daily, 2 Frenchies, along with the abundant wildlife all around the farm. WHAT WILL YOU DO? We like to have around 25 hours of work per week, but we work with each WWOOFer to organize a schedule that works for them and leaves time to explore our beautiful area. Our projects happen from February through October, with our busiest time during blueberry picking season in July and August when the farm is filled with summer employees, pickers, and hopefully WOOFers! Jobs will be different depending on when you arrive, but often will include tending to the blueberries - weeding, harvesting, and processing; working in the organic veggie patches; repairing fencing; painting; and other jobs that keep the farm looking good and running smoothly. Jobs will vary depending on the weather, time of year, and your unique skills! We are looking for people who are willing to get dirty, work hard, enjoy a laugh, and treat others with kindness. WHERE WILL YOU STAY? We have self-contained accommodations on the farm in either a 2-bedroom basement suite (suited to a couple or singles) or a cabin (suited to couples), each with private washroom and cooking facilities. The spaces are stocked with staples for cooking, plus there is access to the veggie gardens and a weekly fund for you to shop for key meal ingredients (e.g., your proteins). When time allows, we enjoy firing up our smoker to host a barbecue. WHAT'S AROUND? The farm is a short walk to Sproat Lake which is great for swimming, canoeing, and kayaking. It is also a short walk to the nearby pub if that's what you prefer. The forest at the edge of our property leads directly into miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. We are also about a 1-hour drive from the Island's stunning west coast. Good internet access available to keep you connected!

I had a wonderful time at Avalon Farm! Jana and Jimmy were so welcoming and made sure my stay was a great one. The work is clear and enjoyable, and they are very flexible with your hours. Would highly recommend!

My stay with Jana and Jimmy was fantastic. They are both wonderful hosts and give you a lot of freedom as long as you complete the required work hours. That's what I personally liked best. My home was the cabin, which is perfect for one person. I could sit on that bench forever! The work was classic farm work, but you're prepared for that. I would definitely recommend Avalon and would definitely come back again!

The farm with Jana and Jimmy as hosts is such a great and beautiful place to do WOOFING. I had my own little cabin with a little kitchen, bed, bathroom and enough space to store stuff for my whole stay. For my work I was given different tasks, so I that I wouldn’t do the same thing the whole day and I could switch between the tasks. Jana and Jimmy were always interested in a good conversation and were curious about your personal life, interests and what you are up to. But they also respect your privacy. Jimmy is an amazing cook! The food he cooked was absolutely delicious and he made sure that there was enough for everyone. I definitely recommend WOOFING there!

Such a beautiful farm that working here hardly feels like work. Not only is Avalon Farm a stunning place, but Jana and Jimmy are genuinely lovely people. They’re incredibly reasonable with the workload and keen to mix things up where possible. The self-contained accommodation is cosy and completely private, but with plenty of opportunities to be social when you feel like it. Jana and Jimmy are always up for a chat, and Jimmy cooks a seriously good feed! They have two very cute dogs, which is also a bonus. Can’t recommend WWOOFing at Avalon Farm enough.

Jana and Jimmy are excellent hosts, we had a lot laughs and great food. You really feel like part of the team once you arrive. The accomodation was great with my own space and view of the farm. I enjoyed the garden work and worked my expected hours around a few excursions further round the island, which have me opportunity to explore a lot. Avalon farm is located in an area with loads to see and do, with a great swimming hole not fat from the house. Id give 5 stars if there was a rating system!

Jana and Jimmy are such kind and hard-working people! They did everything to make me feel comfortable and right at home - and then some. They were super social and helpful. The farm is beautiful and the work was super straightforward, thus amazing for wwoofers with no previous experience like me. I would totally come here again! Thank you for an amazing time :)
