We are a queer couple who are passionate about food. We are currently looking for some help with the 2026 harvesting season starting with berry picking in early July through to the orchard harvest mid September - mid October at our Read island location. Summer is a wonderful time to visit the Outer Discovery islands as it usually is our best weather, there will be baby goats to tend (due mid May) and the garden is full of fresh organic produce. maya has been living on Read island for 30 years building up the garden using regenerative practices based on a small herd of goats & flock of chickens . She is a qualified herbalist who makes many of her own tinctures & remedies. She is originally from Germany but has now been living on Read for most of her life creating the beautiful gardens that surround our homestead. dood is a retired science teacher who is an Iyengar yoga instructor. She is originally from England but has lived in Canada for 28 years. She has a property on Quadra at which you will stay en route to Read. She is involved in sustainability initiatives on both Quadra & Read living part time on the two neighbouring islands. We want to encourage gender fluid & queer folk to explore their connection with the land through participating in the WWOOFer experience with us. We both live together on Read in the spring & summer months where we belong to a small tight knit island community of about 100 people. One of our dreams is to increase our food production beyond meeting just our personal & animals needs to contribute to the food sovereignty of the Outer Islands. Our property: We are situated on a small rural island & acknowledge that we live & work on the unceded territory of the Homalco nation. We are located on about 7 acres, next to a salmon bearing creek, with a 3 acre clearing in which the main house & gardens are surrounded by the meadows for our goat herd. The property is drug & alcohol free. We are completely off grid & while we have a shower/ bath in the house the toilet facilities are outside in an outhouse in order to save water as we are on a gravity fed well system. maya has planted a small orchard over the years which is now mature including cherry, apple, pear, grape vines & hazel nut trees. We grow a wide variety of food crops in beds including many berries, squash, corn, greens & tomatoes. You will get here by taking a ferry from Campbell River on Vancouver Island to Quadra. Then you will stay overnight on Quadra at dood’s property in a small cabin where we will meet up with you. We will then travel together across Quadra on dirt roads to Hoskyn dock (about 40 minutes) where we keep our boat. We will take you across to Surge Narrows dock on Read Island where we will drive across Read on dirt roads towards Evans Bay. Whilst you are here you will have access to loaner bicycles & we will carpool to island events. Accommodation & meals Once set up WWOOFers will be very comfortable in a newly built cabin by the hazelnut grove - ideally if there are 2 of you we would like you to be willing to share a bed although we could set up a second mattress in the one room cabin in a pinch. You will eat your main meals with us in the house which is about 1500 sq ft with several covered porches and beautiful garden beds, including a fig and apricot tree, along the south facing side. There is plenty of space for everyone to feel comfortable whatever we are all doing. We enjoy a variety of local foods, including goat meat, seafood, wild mushrooms, and of course, our own vegetables. Our diet also includes once or twice weekly vegetarian meals (so if you have a specific diet we may well be able to accommodate your needs). Homemade gluten free breads, kefir and cheeses are a staple. Part of our passion with food is about cooking with local ingredients which equates to amazing meals, prepared with love every day, If you are interested in learning about all aspects of food, from the seeding to the preservation to the table, we might be a perfect fit! About your stay We suggest you bring appropriate clothing for our island weather. This includes rain gear and gumboots, if possible. Hat, gloves and scarf too.Layers are best, as the temperature can fluctuate quite a bit at any time of the year.In addition to personal toiletries, please bring a sleeping bag, if possible (if not, arrangements can be made). Read Island is a unique place. There is much to see and do here and we will try to facilitate any local activity our WWOOFers wish to engage in during their time off which will likely include typical island pursuits such as kayaking, swimming & hiking. We appreciate connecting with like-minded people. If you have a love of food, love working with all aspects of food and are willing to put in the time required to create and honour all that sustains life, we'd love to host you! We ask that all that come to stay with us show respect for each other, everyone and everything that shares this planet with us. Organic methods: We practice crop rotation and regenerative agriculture. Certifications: We primarily grow food to sustain ourselves & our animals, although grown without chemicals and pesticides, we have not gone through the process of becoming certified. Current projects: Spring/Summer 2026 We are currently looking for people willing to help pick our wide variety of berries in July continuing with crop care through to the orchard fruit harvest in late September - early October. Finishing work to the interior of the WWOOFer cabin in which you will stay Renovating our plumbing from the well to the house Replacement of fences around the gardens & goat fields Tending the garden and current greenhouse (plant, water, harvest) Foraging for materials to sustain the goats (branches), gardens (seaweed) & foodstuffs (nettles, mushrooms etc.) Looking after the goats & chickens is a large part of our day so you should be prepared to get close up & personal with our critters! WOWZERS. This was our first time wwoofing and we had a magical adventure with maya, dood and their creatures. We learned heaps about homesteading, heard rad queer feminist stories, and experienced sheer tranquility. We were lucky to be there during Beachfest and see the community gather for some wicked performances and amazing food. THE FOOD. We mainly stayed with maya during our time, and she made us incredible meals from her garden’s bounty. We were trusted with some carpentry jobs, gardening, berry picking, mending, and goat tending – our bodies felt awesome from a combination of great food, fresh air, and satisfying movement from work on the homestead. We travelled to maya’s homestead on Read on our first day, with a small stopover at dood’s home on Quadra. The best hosts, the best vibes – all throughout. We spent our time on Read, working together and resting between jobs (cribbage, naps, and swims). maya's landline allowed us to take some time away from our phones/internet/tech. At the end of our stay, maya brought us to dood’s place. Here, we had access to a washer/dryer, and shower, so we could prep for our stint in the city the following day. dood gave us excellent instructions, and brought us to the ferry so we could venture to our Island Link bus at Campbell River. maya and dood – you are both treasures – thank you for sharing your slice of life with us! What a nourishing experience.

Read Island Homestead is such a beautiful place. Full of flowers, fruit trees, berry bushes, veggies, goats, and chickens. The grapevines are particularly gorgeous. I enjoyed all my tasks, especially mowing grass and nailing in siding. Twice daily we did the goat house poop scoop, so bring clothes and footwear just for that. My sleeping accommodations were comfortable in the attic, and meals were fresh and locally sourced. It took some time adjusting to the meal schedule as work starts at 7 but breakfast is at 10. Good opportunity for me to try something different. Also, staying at an off-grid house was a fantastic learning opportunity. Good to be mindful of resource use - water, fuel, electricity. Everything in the homestead has to be carted all the way out there, so waste-not want-not is a good policy!

We had a wonderful first wwoofing experience with Maya and Dood. The farm is stunning and testifies to the care and dedication that has been put into it over the past decades. The work is pretty easy and varied, and the goats are so much fun. We did small jobs like weeding, pruning, turning soil, and cleaning the barn morning and might. In the afternoon, we often got to sit in the sun and watch the goats as they grazed in the garden. We got to meet some other members of the community through activities like canoeing and enjoy the beautiful sights of the island. We also enjoyed the many breaks we got to spend knitting and chatting with Maya, who is so generous with her stories and knowledge about gardening, life off-grid, nature, etc. We enjoyed the meals that Maya and Dood prepared for us, with basically everything coming straight from their garden. You can expect the food to be fresh and delicious! We followed their eating schedule of intermittent fasting, meaning that the three meals would be eaten between 10am-6pm (you do not have to and are offered to have breakfast earlier if you want). We found the diet to be less food than what we are were used to eating at home but we adjusted and enjoyed the homemade meals prepared! They were also eager to offer us foods we liked, accommodated to our dietary choices, and offered us some treats like a great sugar-free banana bread and crumble. Overall, we adored our time on Read and are grateful for the warm and generous hosts.

We spend two weeks at Mayas and Doods and first stayed in the cabin at Doods, leaving to Mayas house on Read island two days later. They are both very friendly and hospitable people and amazing cooks. We learned a lot from both of them regarding having a garden and animals and being off grid, about sustainability and community as well as canadian games and landscape. Our work involved a lot of digging, work in the garden and other preparations for summer as well as of course taking care of the chicken and the goats. The latter also became very friendly with us after some time and especially Queenie and Merle (two of the goats) loved to be petted, which was a wonderful experience. In the mornings sometimes deer came to doods property, too. It was quite a lot of work with almost no day of break, but with some time to explore the landscape on Read and Quadra Island as well as breaks during the day. Since Amelie is vegetarian, they also cooked without meat (thank you!) and put us onto beautiful trails and walks to explore the nature on the islands. We had a great first time wwoofing still with the indescribable amounts of rain in the first week. Also they both have cats that you can only love and we couldn't help but fall for Mayas mouse catcher Barny :).

I feel so ever grateful for the 9 days I spent on Maya and Dood's homestead on Read Island. The homestead is so magical, nestled in a rainforest surrounded by old growth trees. Its evident how much love and passion has been put into the land. The farm and lifestyle on the homestead revolve around regenerative permaculture, with every daily task and decision rooted in sustainability. Each morning and evening I helped tend to the goats and chickens, while afternoons were spent harvesting apples, pears, and hazelnuts. I had lots of time to rest in between and enjoy slow living through resting, reading, and enjoying the beautiful surroundings. We shared many delicious meals together using fresh ingredients from the garden and the farm. They were also very accommodating to my food preferences (vegetarian). Maya and Dood made sure I experienced the island's beauty—pointing me to trails and beaches, biking together, kayaking, visiting the bookclub and Seaweed cafe. I felt very welcomed and inspired by the tight-knit community here. It was a really special experience to learn from Maya and Dood about plant knowledge/herbalism, food sustainability, community building, and various facets of off-grid living. They are very open, honest, and caring people. I truly had a special and transformative time here on Read :-)

We had a happy, peaceful time at Maya and Dood's. The chickens, goats and strawberry picking were particular highlights. We also enjoyed sunny afternoons at the beach after our morning routine and before putting the goats to bed. The fresh delicious food, lots of exercise and new ways of living were a well-needed pause from our chaotic London life. We would enjoy coming back in the future! Thanks so much to both of you for your hospitality and book suggestions!
