Hobby Farm
British Columbia
Hello!
We are a young family with a hobby farm in the beautiful Bella Coola Valley.
We currently have a large garden, hay fields, a barn and many old fruit trees (apple, cherry, pear, plum). We have a small flower operation and are looking to expand our lavender field. We also have many wild berry bushes, including saskatoon berries, thimble berry, choke cherries, and wild rose hips.
From our property, you can access mountain bike trails and the trail to the East Schoolhouse Falls which provides a beautiful view of the valley in addition to the falls.
We are preparing to have a dozen chickens this spring and are preparing electric fence and fortifying the barn and coop area in preparation.
We are also actively taking cuttings of lavender and replenishing our field that got hit hard by two extreme winters followed by extreme summer temps.
Some activities you can expect to help with would be:
Weeding
Electric fence maintenance
Taking lavender cuttings
Picking berries, fruit and vegetables from the garden (harvesting in late summer and fall)
Carpentry projects - assisting with greenhouse
Composting
Painting, sanding and staining
Lawn mowing and weed wacking
Clearing fence
Feeding the chickens and mucking out the chicken coop (coming soon)
Seed saving
Processing food (drying, canning, juicing)
Bella Coola also has many impressive rock cliffs, creating bouldering and rock climbing opportunities.
The river is a short bike ride away and great way to cool off after a day on the farm!
We would be happy to show you some of our favourite hiking trails. Can't wait to meet you!
Organic methods: We use eggshells to keep slugs from the garden, trim disease from trees and cayenne pepper sprays for other bugs on vegetable leaves. We also do companion planting, for example, using onions or marigolds strategically to deter pests. While these are labour intensive, we know we are part of the ecosystem and wish for it to flourish.
Certifications: We use all organic processes but have not yet applied for certification.
Current projects: Helping to plant and maintain the garden - it was recently tilled over from lawn and will likely have many weeds the first few years.
Help with cutting flowers and bouquet arrangement. Our last WWoofers assisted with wedding flowers.
Harvesting produce and flowers from the garden
Canning, drying and preserving the garden harvest as it ripens
Saving and drying seed
Producing seedlings and transplants
Keeping the fruit trees productive and healthy- pruning, watering
Firewood - chopping, stacking, splitting kindling
Establishing a trail through some swampy sections in the back of the property to have better access to the mountain bike trails.

I had a great time wwoofing at Michell’s and Gord’s beautiful place! My tasks included watering the plants, harvesting flowers for bouquets or drying, harvesting crops for food, weedwacking, planting seeds and seedlings, berrypicking and fencing. We also did canning of applesauce and prepared elderberry to make syrup. I also enjoyed spending time with the kids, being brought along on family activities and having dinners outside.
Hagensborg is a beautiful place with warm people, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to spend time here.
Thank you, Michelle, Gord, Sunny and Clay.

This was definitely my place to be! Michelle and Gord are such warmly and hospitable Canadians and their little son Sunny is truly a gold piece. From minute one I felt welcomed in their comfy house and on their beautiful property in Hagensborg (with lots of hiking possibilities nearby). I learned so much about gardening work (seeding, weeding, chopping wood and making fire etc.) and it was never too hard to do. Thank you, Michelle and Gord, for taking me to all these beautiful places, for the interesting conversations, the delicious food and everything you taught me about sustainable living in Canada! Highly recommended if you want to have an amazing time in the Bella Coola Valley.
