Red Cedar Farmstead – Quadra Island, BC
Hi! We are Scott and Amber, and together with our two daughters, Lily and Holly, we run a small market garden and homestead on our 5-acre farm.
With the help of seasonal helpers, we operate a small-scale CSA program and weekly farm stand stock days. Our farm includes a Jersey milking cow who provides all of our dairy needs (and plenty of manure!), as well as, chickens (layers and meat), geese and Call ducks. We farm using permaculture principles and no-till practices, emphasizing healthy soil life and working with natural systems. We have built up a strong understanding of natural farming techniques and feel we have a lot of knowledge to share.
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking an individual or couple who is eager to learn about small-scale market gardening and animal husbandry. This opportunity is well suited to someone eager to gain hands-on experience in diversified, small-scale food production.
Tasks may include:
- Daily animal care and morning chores
- Harvesting and washing vegetables
- Bed preparation, transplanting, weeding, and mulching
- helping with the farm stand stock days and CSA
- Optional learning opportunities such as hand-milking our cow.If you’re interested, we’re happy to teach and share our skills.
Life on Quadra Island
Quadra is an incredible place to explore, with endless opportunities for outdoor adventure. The island offers numerous hiking trails, an extensive mountain biking network for all skill levels, and easy access to kayaking, climbing, and swimming. Beautiful spots like Rebecca Spit are just minutes away. We can provide a bicycle to explore the surrounding areas. We also like to explore and find new swimming spots off island when we have the time. We’re always up for an adventure!
Accommodation & Meals
You’ll stay in a very clean, well-equipped RV trailer on the farm. We’re looking for someone who is independent and comfortable cooking some of their own meals. And we’re happy to host shared dinners several times a week. All food will be provided—including farm-fresh vegetables, fruit, eggs, and dairy.
We’re hoping to find someone who can stay 4-6 weeks, or longer. We are interested in finding someone, who enjoys helping in the kitchen with preserving and cooking, spending a few hours each week helping us make delicious food. This is the whole reason why we farm, for the love of good food!
The weekly schedule is approximately 22 - 25/week, Tuesday to Saturday, with Sunday and Monday’s off. We usually start around 7am and ending around 1, leaving your afternoons free to explore and relax.
A Little More About Us
We have two wonderful, energetic girls who love to help on the farm and play, so someone who enjoys being around kids is important to us. We also have a small Shetland Sheepdog who is very sweet, but enthusiastic about barking, even after she’s met you a hundred times! Scott loves running and hunting and I love hiking and drawing. We also love to explore the outdoors and find new picnic spots with the girls.
We would love to hear from you! If this sounds like a good fit, please send us an email and we’d love to chat more.
