Thank you for visiting our page. I, Kathy, and my husband, Mike, run one of Canada's largest horse rescues - Bear Valley Rescue Society. We have dedicated our lives to rehabilitating, re-homing, and when needed, providing long-term sanctuary to, horses that are slaughter-bound, neglected, abused or abandoned. We are a charity organization and rely solely on donations. We started the WWOOFing program early in 2018 and have had an amazing experience with many international volunteers so far.
Our daughter-in-law Astrid, originally from France, is now a large part of the Rescue, in charge of animal care.
Currently, we are looking for motivated and positive volunteers year round. Caring for over 150 horses and all the other rescued animals here is quite demanding so we very much appreciate having a few helping hands around. During your potential stay with us, you will have the chance to spend time not only with horses, but also the cows, donkeys, and goats who call Bear Valley their home. We also have cats and dogs at the Rescue looking for attention and pets.
There is a lot of maintenance work that needs to be done to keep the Rescue running smoothly.
The work can be very physically demanding so being fit and used to working outside are important. What is an absolute asset though is love, patience, and respect for all animals here. You will meet animals that may have had a tough life so far and we can’t tolerate any negative or wrong attitudes towards the animals here. Also because horses are large and powerful animals, being comfortable around them and having common sense are both necessary.
At the Rescue we have a volunteer center where up to four volunteers can stay at once. One room has a bunk bed and a single bed. There is also a loft with a queen size bed. Your accommodation will include a shared but private bathroom with a shower, a small dining area, and a small living room with a tv and a ton of DVDs you can borrow from us.
We provide basic vegetarian food. We often go into town and you are always more than welcome to accompany us if you need to pick up additional groceries. We have satellite internet but with limited data so streaming video is discouraged but you are able to stay in touch with friend and family.
Please note we are not a riding facility. While we encourage and appreciate interaction with the horses, most have never been ridden and may be fearful of people. We rely heavily on volunteers to keep everything running smoothly around here and thank you for your interest! Feel free to send us your inquiries or any questions you might have.
