Farm
Yukon
Starting in 2018, this is an organic farm that is establishing a cold climate orchard and other crops. The property is off-grid and overlooks the St Elias mountains in Kluane National Park, about half the property is cleared and half is boreal forest. Your host has experience as a wwoofer and as a wwoof host. Work includes: help with orchard maintenance, fencing, weeding. Some tasks are physically demanding. Wwoofers with previous experience doing physical work is a benefit. Outside of work hours there is plenty to enjoy in the area. Kluane National Park is a few kilometres away for hiking and sightseeing. Closer to home there are walking trails. Accommodation is in a spacious wall tent with insulated floor, wood heat and deck or a vintage RV. Various internet options available in Haines Junction. Cellular network available. Minimum stay five nights. Stays of up to 4 weeks may be possible. What to expect - rustic living with no running water and a farm located in a wilderness setting. The Kluane region is in bear country and bears and other wild animals visit the property. A solar system provides power. Skills sharing - always open to an opportunity to learn new skills and crafts! Ie. farming, or natural building (eg. timber framing, stone masonry). There are two friendly dogs at the farm.

My time at Wicklow Farm was such a special experience. I learned so much about farming, mountain life, plants, and even bears (apparently, a hair clip can save you sometimes! 😂). The views were absolutely stunning, and the peaceful mornings and friendly conversations made every day memorable.
The host is incredibly kind, patient, and organized — always willing to explain things and share knowledge about the land and lifestyle. Staying here really opened my eyes to what life in the Yukon is like and gave me a deep appreciation for the simplicity and beauty of farm living.
If you enjoy nature, learning new things, disconnecting yourself from the anxiety of city life, and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, Wicklow Farm is an amazing place to be. It’s a peaceful, welcoming environment where you can truly slow down and connect with the land. I’m so glad I chose to visit — it was an unforgettable experience!
Thank you again for the great time, Finella!

Thanks Neal! It was a pleasure hosting you this summer. I appreciated your attitude to learning about farming and homesteading. You did well to adapt to a different setting! I appreciated our long conversations over supper in the evening.
I hope you will go on to be engaged in farming in other ways in the future. Wishing you the best of luck in your future wwoofing stays and in your studies. Keep me posted if you make it back up to the Yukon!

I wish I had known this before my stay, the organic farm is not Finella’s main activity. When I arrived, there were hardly any plantations ready. I stayed for 3 weeks. I found my daily tasks a bit repetitive, with little variety. A lot of weeding and watering.
As for the schedule (which was communicated in advance), it’s 6/7 days, 6 hours a day. The workload is perfectly OK. Most of the time I worked alone.
Regarding dinners, I often found them too light, especially after 6 hours of work (just soup and a bit of salad), and not very varied (I had the same dinner four nights in a row during my last week). The rest of the meals are taken in the harvey, you go shopping with her and she pays the bill. In terms of quantity it was fine, but in terms of quality be aware that she doesn’t pay for vegetables. So I had to buy my own carrots, salad, etc.
As for the harvey, it’s just functional and I didn’t find it very clean when I arrived...watch out it can be very cold inside. I didn’t bring the right clothes and I regretted it during the first week, luckily it got warmer afterwards!
On a personal level, it didn’t really click. Conversations were very one-sided. All the questions I asked were answered, but I really felt little interest shown towards me. So I stopped asking questions, and the conversations became quite poor.
A car is essential if you really want to explore the area.
The place is beautiful, isolated.
Truly rustic conditions and host — not for everyone :)

It was disappointing to read a review that is so very different from the experience provided. In response to the review here, to correct the record, here are clarifications:
I have a job that provides income to pay for the mortgage and development of the farm. It is not possible for a single person to work full time farming and construct all the buildings and infrastructure. I work alongside wwoofers on a number of tasks but explain to them in the call beforehand that I can’t do this all the day long.
I always make a point of setting up varied tasks throughout the day. There was some watering and but unfortunately Victor was opposed to weeding so he didn’t do hardly any. The work is 6 days a week and not 7 as indicated.
I am a cook and pride myself on thoughtful, healthy and nutritious meals. To suggest they meals were light is untrue. Victor, you had local pork sausages over a campfire, halibut soup, Alaskan salmon, cakes and more.
Food: I provide food for wwoofers that is to a high standard, this includes salads and fresh veggies. I don’t know where this comment comes from that I don’t.
The only thing I can agree with here is that we didn’t click. The aggression shown towards me by this wwoofer, particularly the shouting, was very difficult manage. It certainly affected our interactions not knowing when another outburst might occur.

Finella has such a beautiful and peaceful property overlooking the mountains!! She has two amazing dogs and lots of fun projects to keep busy with. Finella is so kind, a great cook, and super knowledgeable. She is always willing to share her knowledge with Wwoofers and answer any questions they might have. There’s a ton of stuff to do around Haines Junction and Fin is happy to help you explore the area. Wicklow farm is definitely worth the visit if you are coming to the Yukon and looking for some peace and quiet in nature.

I recommend this place, Finella is so.nice, she was also a woofer so she understand you. She take the time.to talk with you, and this is a a very important thing, also she take the time to bring you a ride to go hikking. The place is very beautiful, sorrunded by wildernes. Bring a camera or cellphone to take pictures of the bears!!!. The work is no hard it all, and the acomodations make you fell in a wild place (the shower in the forest is a great experience). I wish I could stay by the cutting and hauling wood season, I hope to be back to experience this work. Again, I recommended to.go.there.

I have been on Finella’s farm for 3 weeks and I absolutely loved it! Finella is such an inspiring person and taught me a lot about herbs, animals and living self sufficient. I felt that’s she’s gonna be a great friend by the first time I met her. We could talk about God and the world. I’m sad that I couldn’t stay longer. I would definitely come back and I hope there will be one day when I actually can.

I spent June, July, and August of 2022 on Wickow farm and had some of the best times of my life. The place is wild and beautiful, and I was exposed to all kinds of incredible wildlife, while learning how to grow food with my own hands, and while being given some idea of what it is to live "Off-grid".
I think it's fair to say that, when it comes both to what woofers want in a farm, and what hosts expect of woofers, the variety is huge. This farm is definitely on the "Hard work" end of the spectrum. One can expect to do a lot of hard work here, whilst also living off grid in a wilderness setting, without many of the creature comforts one may be used to. However, if you are looking to get a real taste of what it's like to grow your own food, living among the mountains and the woods and the animals of the northern wilderness, you can expect to have an extremely eye opening, and fulfilling time.
Finella is a great host, and although busy herself, will take the time to teach you, if you are enthusiastic to learn. I always went to bed with a full stomach, despite having a massive appetite, and had plenty of opportunities to explore the nearby Kluane. That being said, I was generally happy to spend a lot of my downtime on the farm and exploring the trails of the surrounding forest.
As I've said, the work is hard, and the comforts less than most are used to, but at the end of the day you can sit down in the stillness and the beauty of the Yukon. I'll be back for sure.
