We are a family of 4 who run a small hobby farm on beautiful SaltSpring Island, BC.  We  raise geese and ducks, both for eggs and meat.  We have a small flock of hair sheep that are also providing meat for our family. There is a large veggie garden which provides our family and farmstand sales. We are slowly developing the land into orchards both fruit, nut, and berries.  We consider ourselves to be the stewards of the land and the soil health. The farm has been running for only five years under our ownership but has a long history as a farm, formerly raising grassfed beef, and having a large veggies garden that has been farmed using organic methods for over 15 years. We farm using ecologically sound methods. We welcome friends travelling together and couples who are interested to live and work on a farm and who enjoy spending time with children and caring for animals.  Our accomodations are best suited to couples or a pair of friends travelling together. Tasks will include berry picking, gardening, animal care, tree planing, weeding, clearing land and small projects such as building or woodworking projects.  Repairs and maintenance are ongoing on farms so we always welcome those with a wide range of skills and interests.   We have free range geese and ducks so it is important to be at ease around animals and to be familiar with the importance of quiet and steady energy when working around them.  We find that both animals and young children always want to be close bye where you are and often they will follow you around the farm.  Anyone with a fear of geese will not enjoy a stay here as the entire flock will often tail us from one end of the farm to the other and back many times a day!  They are also prone to give a raucous greeting each and every time they meet you or you happen to reappear into their line of site. We find it a lot of fun but some might find it a bit much. Our family loves time outside in nature and caring for our land and animals.  We love to have a cultural exchange with our visitors in learning about their homes and lands as we share ours with them.  Organic methods: We use no chemical fertilizers or herbicide/pesticide of any kind.  We do use compost, compost teas, natural mulches, green manure crops and other approved organic approaches to growing. Certifications: We are using only organic products but are not yet certified organic. We are interested in biodynamics and permaculture approaches to growing. Current projects: Fence repairs, Barn clean outs, Barn repairs, Mulching trees and hedgerows, Haying, Nursery tasks. Planting of hedgerows. Planting of trees Pond and riparian zone restoration and planting in native plants. Internet access available

Our stay with Julia, Fraser, Alexia and Tristan was absolutely wonderful. It was our first WWOOFing experience, and we truly could not have imagined a better one. From the very beginning, we felt incredibly welcome and comfortable. During our stay, the lambs arrived unexpectedly weeks earlier than planned. Over the course of a week, we kept discovering newborn lambs in the mornings while feeding the animals, often twins, which made each day feel very special. In total, eight lambs were born during that time. Julia also shared so much knowledge with us about the animals, and we learned a lot from her, which made the experience even more meaningful. We truly loved taking care of the animals, and when they were away for a few days, they trusted us to look after the animals and the cats, which meant a lot to us. The food was amazing and we truly appreciated the effort that was always made to prepare vegetarian meals for us. We also really enjoyed being included in a game night with their friends, which was a lot of fun and made us feel very welcome. Overall, it was a beautiful and memorable time. We are incredibly grateful for the kindness, trust, and warmth we experienced and will always remember this special first WWOOFing experience. We can wholeheartedly recommend this farm to anyone, especially because of the amazing people and the stunning surroundings.

I am deeply grateful that I could spend my first WWOOFing experience at Julia, Fraser and the kids’ Farm. They have been most kind, open and trusting and made me feel at home. Julia went above and beyond to accommodate me as a vegetarian and let me take part in their lives. The little cabin I stayed in provided everything needed and the work hours are very fair. I’ve learned a lot about farm life, plants and life in general. Julia and Fraser also made a big effort to guarantee, I get the most out of my experience on this Island and I will not forget this wonderful first WWOOFing. They also answered my short term request very quick, which is really great, I even got to stay a little longer than anticipated. Thank you for your trust and I hope to see you again sometime :)

This was my first experience WWOOFing, and I can wholeheartedly say that it was an in credible opportunity. Julia and Fraser are very welcoming, always ready to offer up food (which always tastes fantastic), and are very down to earth. Their farm is fun to work on, and as long as your willing to get your hands dirty, you'll have a great time there. They also accepted my request very last minute, and still managed to be quite hospitable. They have good local knowledge of things to do in the are, and you will never be bored.

I had a wonderful time with Julia, Fraiser, Alexia, and Tristan. They are an absolutely lovely family, and I felt very comfortable and welcome throughout my stay. My room was beautiful, with a stunning view of the water. Julia goes above and beyond to make sure you feel at home, which I truly appreciated. The work was fair and enjoyable, and I was happy to contribute. I can highly recommend staying with them!

I had a wonderful stay with Julia, Fraser, Alexia and Tristan. Yhe first thing that struck me when I arrived was the quality of the accommodation. This is the 5th wwoofing I've done, and I've never had a room so clean and tidy, which just goes to show how kind this family is and how much they care about the woofers' stay. The working days are right, you just don't have to be afraid of getting up early. I started my days at 7-7:30am by feeding, watering and taking out of the barn the geese and ducks, watering the sheep, checking the state of the fences and watering the plants on hot days. After these daily chores I did other tasks until 12-12:30pm such as clearing undergrowth, removing winter's accumulation of hay and droppings from ducks/geese and sheep barns, putting away bales of hay... Afternoons are free, and in the evening I water the plants for about 1 hour, then bring the geese and ducks into the barn. Week-end are free. The family is very nice, we share evening meals together, they took me to the museum on Vancouver Island, they paid for the restaurant several times, they showed me around their Island, I watched the Olympics with them... And the little extra it's the view from the house is incredible ^^ Thank you ! Olivier

Thank you Olivier. Your company and your help was so much appreciated. You are welcome back any time for a future visit. We wish you all the best in your travels and studies. We really appreciate how our kids learn from the cultural exchange - learning more about France and hopefully inspired to study the language more. Also, your hiking and climbing is inspiring to all of us. .

I was there almost two and I liked every day. I worked 5 hours and the rest I had free or played with the children. On the weekends I could visit the market or just go hiking, I have learned a lot. Thank you :D
