I enjoy meeting and hosting people from all around the world and sharing my property with those who appreciate nature and animals and the quiet and tranquility that is associated with this isolated spot in the Cypress Hills. My goal is to treat others as you would have them treat you and that includes all races, religions and genders in people but I would like to think we should extend that to include animals both wild and domestic. I am passionate about treating the planet with respect and I strongly endorse environmentally friendly ideas such as recycling and reclaiming and exploring new and alternative ways to heat, cool and transport ourselves around this globe. I love to learn about food, traditions and culture from my wwoofers and guests as I seldom get the chance to travel myself. The Spring Valley Guest Ranch is a working ranch with a herd of commercial cows plus a mini dairy specializing in rare and heritage breeds. The ranch also has a flock of 200 chickens made up of four breeds. The guest ranch takes in Bed and Breakfast guests as well as hosts writers retreats, weddings, reunions and also hosts musical concerts in the Saville Theatre. What's for fun? Come and enjoy a truly quiet and peaceful stay in a secluded setting! Stroll around the barnyard, lawns and gardens, or hike over prairies, hills or a wooded valley with a year-round flowing spring running through it. Relish fresh air, tranquility and beautiful views! Chill out in the loft watching TV or choosing from the vast selection of DVDs, VCRs and board games.Local attractions include the T-Rex Discovery Centre, the Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, Fort Walsh National Historic Site, Jones Peak, Whitemund Pits, local museums, golf courses, biking, horse riding, fishing and hiking. The ranch is located in the Cypress Hills, about 50km South-west of Maple Creek and 37km North-west of Eastend. The last 15km leading to the ranch are on gravel roads.   Certifications: Too costly to certify. Internet access available

We had with our Labrador a wonderful time at Jim’s Ranch. His Ranch is now a little smaller then a few years before, but he have still so lovely and nice animals we had to feed every day. His cats was very nice to us and our dog. Jim is so a kind and nice person. He showed us so much from the Prairie, explained a lot of the history and we met some very nice people with him. We learned so much and had so a nice experience and so funny board game nights and conversations. Jim is so a good chef. We helped him with the animals, splitting wood, cleaned up his yard and helped a little with his B&B business. We enjoyed our time so much. We will come back!

We stayed at Jim’s ranch for 10 days and we had such a cool time ! Jim is so nice and welcoming. He’s also a good cooker. We built a wood deck around the house, repaired fences, helped a cow to give birth ... we had a big room for ourselves and a private bathroom. it has been a great stay.. Jim is looking for woofers for the season, so don’t hesistate !

It was such a great experience at Spring Valley Guest Ranch. Firstly, Jim was so friendly and made sure I was getting a great experience. Once the farm work was done each day, he spent the time to show me around his farm and the town nearby. Secondly, the farm and the whole area around is such a beautiful place. Apart from the animals, he has also lots of artworks that I was so excited about. Moreover, the farm is located in a perfect location where one can enjoy the magical beauty of prairies and wonderful open sky. I hope I will get more time in the coming years to visit again.

For the coming Wwoofers in 2018, I went twice to Jim's ranch last winter and enjoyed the overwhelming sense of quietness and timelessness, as well as the various opportunities to experience his ranch, his life-style, and his neighbourhood. Jim has his 30th ranch anniversary this year and sure needs help with the preparation for the coming events, besides the daily chores, the caring for the calves, and the maintenance of the fences, houses, and barns. The longer I stayed the more I realized that I don't know much about ranching as his knowledge, his skills and his gentle way treating his animals are deeply rooted in his childhood experiences on his parents' ranch. Thus, he follows his own rhythm according to the seasons and the weather based on a rancher's profound spirit. Spring Valley Guest Ranch is with its creek, Jim's assistance, and his connectedness with the locals a unique place for Woofers who seek ranching experiences in a natural prairie setting, including stars and full moon at night, auras around the sun, and wonderful redish sunrises. Out of the kitchen window we watched deer sleeping and moose browsing in the garden, the coyotes howling a lullaby. You may also read and talk about local literature, take part in one of Nick's pot parties (https://www.facebook.com/nicksavillepottery/), visit the Jasper Cultural and Historic Centre in Maple Creek or go to a concert in Eastend .... take a walk along the Frenchman River valley or hike in the Cypress Hills ... lots to explore ..... go for it! With many thanks to Jim from Astrid

I just completed a woofing placement at Jim's place and had a lovely time. Jim provided me with a variety of work assignments, none too difficult or onerous. I really enjoyed his quiet and gentle manner. His cows and calves were a highlight for me and as a result I feel more comfortable around farm animals. When you are out in the open and wide expanse of SW Sask. it allows you to realize just how wonderful our Country is. I know more about food production and appreciate how hard our farmers and ranchers work. I enjoyed meeting various friends and relatives of Jim's. and would recommend this placement..especially as the accomodation is clean, quiet and private. Deborah
