Family home and garden - rural
Prince Edward Island
greetings good wwoofers; the long winter sleep is over! spring is stirring, and i am hoping you will come and help me meet it.
just now, i have june and july openings, and would appreciate help in getting it all going strong.
first, the setting. i'm in eastern PEI in an owner built house and barn, set in 65 acres of pastures and rolling wooded hills, amongst family and friends on the Gairloch road. there is a lush garden of vegetables, flowers, and herbs, surrounded and interplanted with cane fruit, grape vines, and an orchard of apple, pear, plum, peach, and asian pear trees. i am happiest working with nature, and i meet quite a few of my basic food needs. sharing the space with me are a couple of entertaining goats, a small flock of laying hens, a wondrously relaxed cat, and a delightful dog, who would be absolutely thrilled to go for walks with you on the wood trails that abound in this area, anytime.
i would love to share my lifelong experience of seeking to understand and work with nature. in the last few years, my forays in permaculture include trying to comprehend the inestimable multitude and wonder of the soil life teeming beneath our feet, and it's connection to all of life. thus, besides working organically, i now the practice no dig, mulching with seaweed [nearest beach], grass clippings [lawn], scythings [orchard] sawdust [my woodpile and a close by sawmill], and leaves [right here on the trees]. all these are pretty darn local. you'll be involved in caring for the animals too, and hands on for every kind of garden work, planting seeds, attracting beneficial insects, transplanting, weeding, watering, putting down cardboard, making compost, spreading compost, spreading seaweed, erecting garden structures, and watching the garden grow. as well, helping repair anything that's broken, catching what gets loose, and much more! i ask that you generally work 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. [unless something more fun comes up.]
for rest, relaxation, and even more enjoyment, the closest beaches are 12 minutes away by car. the beach is really lovely, and i like to go for evening walks and soak in the gorgeous sunsets. usually there is no-one, so very peaceful. true, it's a bit cold to go in the water just yet [for most of us], but still, you can come with me just to be there and smell the ocean. or, after your work is done and on days off, closer to home, the woods are abounding with hiking trails. remember the dog? you can find your favourite trees to worship while she worships the squirrels.
i am versatile with cooking as i have lots of vegetarian friends. and i do love the beautiful vegetables, so we will also be eating a lot of them! i do eat meat which i have raised myself [chicken] or if i know the farmer [beef and pork] and am certain that the animal has had an organic or at the very least a natural and happy life. of course, i bake bread and make granola. i love to eat, and cook, and enjoy sharing the kitchen, so do bring your favorite recipes. mealtimes are the big social scene around here. a lot of stories get told around the kitchen table.
each wwooofer [or couple] will have a private room. i prefer wwoofers to stay at least two weeks, and a month is better! longer than that is even better yet! if you happen to have rudimentary carpentry skills, i will probably love you forever. same if you can use a chainsaw.
you can get to Pei by airplane, bus, ferry, or best of all, your own car! should you be carless, i am happy to come and pick you up from Charlottetown airport or bus station, or the Wood Island Ferry boat . [ sadly, pei has almost no rural public transport. hard to believe, i know, but true.]
Current projects: the wood trail was widened and beautified by an amazing wwoofer some years ago. [and with a hand saw!] thanks luka! ] but there is still plenty to do clearing the trail up the hill. also i would like to build some cold frames. even maybe a better chicken shed. and, for water retention, put some swales in the orchard as it is on a slope. [ more water encourages those peaches to ripen juicier, sweeter, and faster].
the goal here is to delight in people, animals, our beloved planet, and in all of our connection to the earth and each other, and to be able to skillfully work with the earth and joyfully receive her bounty.
happy trails,
hedwig.
Organic methods: i am not certified because of the expense, but i have only ever used organic methods as i believe deeply in co-operating with the earth and growing healthy food.

Dear Hedi,
I just really love you!
For everybody: Hedi is someone who not just has an organic farm, but lives an organic life to a 100%! You will have the experience to really adapt that lifestyle and learn a large amount of gardening skills, because her garden is full of varieties! You really will be an organic farmer for your stay:)
Thank you so much Hedi for letting me in - it teached me a lot!

Hedi is a very kind and helpful person who lives deep in the forest, surrounded by the embrace of nature. It is like the Hungarian fairy tale of the Old Lady's Doe (Öreg néne őzikéje). Hedi gives the goats the most delicious treats and takes care of them as if they were her own children. This is also the case with this garden.
I worked a lot in the garden, especially pruning the trees, because the host asked me to. I completely pruned the big trees, just as it is written in the big book.
The Atlantic Ocean was a great experience even in autumn. The water was cold, but I could swim. The sunsets were unforgettable. Thank you for that! <3

I would like to leave a message to highlight how happy the woofing experience I had with Edwige made me. It was my first time woofing and thanks to her I experienced much more than that. We worked the land, planted, cut trees, watered and tinkered but I also discovered one of the most caring people I know, learned to love vegetables thanks to Edwige's wonderful dishes and her garden vegetables, I met Joy, a dog who lives up to her name and never tires of playing, I saw dozens of seals during our walks on the beach, I met her friends, her family, visited Charlottetown... I came here to work on my English and Hedwige always took the time to listen to me, to talk with me and to explain things again when needed. I highly recommend any woofer who wants to experience a lifestyle closer to nature and meet new people to visit Edwige's house. Thanks to her🫶🏼🫶🏼

We stayed at Full Moon Garden for 2 weeks in the early June.
Heidi was a wonderful host! She always prepared three delicious meals a day, with most of the ingredients coming from the farm itself or from local farmers, so you can be sure that quality is always outstanding.
Heidi shared with us great stories about PEI history, local life and recommended us places to visit.
The house and surroundings are very beautiful. Heidi makes sure you really feel welcome and like at home. There’s also Joy, the dog always ready to play or go for a walk and Seymour, the cat, who love to be pet all day long.
Regarding the work on the farm: we took care of the baby chicks, cleaned the goat barn and chicken coop, we did weeding in the garden and prepared the garden beds and greenhouse for planting, we mowed the grass in the garden and orchard, planted raspberries, along many other smaller tasks. There is plenty to keep you busy and entertained for 5-6 hours a day! And for every 5 days of work you get 2 days off. You can learn a lot about gardening and permaculture with Heidi, who is always happy to share her knowledge with you.
We arrived with our own car, which made it easier to visit PEI.
We defenitely recommend this place and are very thankful for our time there!!

I stayed with Hedi for just under 3 weeks from October to November, and I am very honoured to have had the opportunity to spend the time with her that I did. Hedi is a very skilled gardener and a wonderful cook. I will dearly miss her incredibly charming cat Seymour and beautiful dog Joy. I learned things while I stayed here that I will not soon forget, and I am very grateful for it.
Hedi, thank you so much for having me. I could not have asked for a better first WWOOF experience.
