A quintessential coastal agricultural experience.
British Columbia
Hello wwoofers, my name is Rob. My wife Val and I have been married for 41 years and live in a large home which we built 30 years ago. We have a dog (Max) and a cat. We also have a large ornamental koi pond.
We live on 4 hectres in Madeira Park. We have a good sized garden and orchard. The garden is primarily for our own use. We use the apples to make juice and cider for our own consumption.
We have about 100 honey bee colonies and we produce honey and queens. We market the honey at the Sechelt farmers market and Madeira Market. The area is a popular tourist destination and there are several beaches within walking distance.
I spend a couple days a week feeding and looking after the bees until the honey flow. At that time I am adding space to the hives and harvesting honey. The honey is extracted in August and September and bottled for selling. We spend 2 days per week at the markets.
Throughout the season I am treating the hives for mites using organic methods.
We also spend time working in the garden harvesting vegetable and fruit. There is plenty of strawberries from 1000 plants.
We eat dinner together, have homemade granola or smoothy for breakfast and forage for lunch. We have private bedrooms and a bathroom.
Val is a quilter and artist. My interests are aquariums, koi ponds but mainly the bees and the garden. We have a boat and enjoy fishing. We have access to kayaks and the area is a popular tourist destination. Hiking, swimming kayaking and cycling are some of the possibilities for the area.
We also use a freeze drier to preserve our fruit and veggies.

This was my first WWOOFing experience, so I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I took a two-week vacation from work and decided to try something completely different — and I’m really glad I did.
Robert and Valerie were welcoming and easy to live with. The work was varied, and I never felt overworked or exhausted. Working with Robert especially felt very comfortable and natural. I also completely fell in love with their dog 😄
For me, the whole experience felt a bit like visiting relatives in the countryside and helping out during vacation. I think everyone comes to places like this with their own expectations and personality, and this experience taught me a lot about that too.
What I appreciated most was that I always felt free and respected. If I needed something, we could talk about it openly, and that made the stay feel relaxed and fair.
Overall, I’m grateful for the experience and happy that this was my first introduction to WWOOFing.
