Hello WWOOFERS, My name is Julia, and together with my partner Ian, we are an energetic youthful couple in our 50’s on the fronts of many creative projects. We live on a 14 acre property in Madoc, ON. Madoc is situated between Toronto and Ottawa, exactly 2.5 hours from both cities. The property has a large magnificent 6 bedroom country home, a separate workshop, a large warehouse, several barns, a chicken coop, a beautiful organic food garden & floral gardens, a small private lake with a dam, waterfall, stream, an ever-flowing spring, forests and open fields. The 14 acre property neighbours the magnificent Black River & 30,000 acres of protected and uninhabited wildlife abundant crown land. Our heritage, organic chickens and guinea fowl enjoy free ranging on our property. They are all layers and not meat birds. Their rainbow coloured eggs are the best! The guineas are well-known bug terminators and predator alerts so help out on both those fronts. The time of year & the weather will dictate what tasks need to be done. Our 2024 projects include planting hundreds of trees, shrubs and herbs to create several areas of organic berries, organic herb garden,s organic orchard, char/biochar gardens, an ecological pond/stream as well as native grasses and plants to promote butterflies and wild life. We need help clearing the tall weeds to prepare these areas for planting. We are also building new and expanding on existing walking trails on the property & in our forest. Weeding, planting and watering our organic vegetable garden keeps us busy during the growing season. We are moving towards becoming more self-sufficient, which requires us to preserve much of our produce by freezing, canning and fermenting. We try to source locally from organic credible farms and shops. In the cooler months our efforts are directed towards cutting and splitting wood for winter heating as an aspect of our forestry management activities. There is a need to mark trees for future removal and/or to prune trees. Our vision involves inviting people back to body-based practises and earth-based practises. We hope to inspire others to seriously consider nurturing what ultimately sustains us. We have decades of experience in yoga, movement, meditation, and embodiment practises and a growing understanding of earth-based practises. We invite you to join us in learning and growing together. We enjoy eating clean healthy food and bake our own breads whenever time permits using organic spelt and rye flours. We have a grand piano and an extensive library room that also serves as our yoga/movement/community space. There is unlimited high speed internet in the house. The fire pit is situated next to our wood burning sauna and spring fed cold plunge that we use 3 times a week and is breathtaking on a clear starry night. We have the following pets/animals: 1 dog Honeybrown, 2 cats that live in our home Harley and Ziggy, 3 cats that live in their own pad Yoni, Kali and Tigerlily, 17 birds, Bernie our Roosters and 9 Heritage Organic Hens plus 7 Organic Colourful and Vocal Guinea Fowl. Our days will often begin with stretching/yoga/movement/journaling (not in the busy seasons), then breakfast, followed by time outside working from approximately 9am to 12pm. Then lunch and other land based activities will follow from 2-5pm. We finish the day with dinner typically between 6-8pm. Schedule is weather dependent and indoor work may be required to replace land based projects if/when it's fully raining outside. We often continue working in light rain. We offer rooms that can each sleep 2-4 people in our country home. You will make your own breakfast and assist with lunch and dinner preparations and clean up. We offer you internet and wifi along with a substantial library of books. You are welcome to enjoy the sauna/cold plunge on certain nights (by invite only). In your free time, we encourage you to enjoy the magical nearby Black River, the conservation areas, the interesting hamlets, artisan galleries, theatre and other cultural attractions in the area. Having your own vehicle to go exploring will make your stay more worthwhile, as there is no public transit. We go to town occasionally, but not for the purpose of site-seeing. We live in a beautiful area with ample opportunity for time alone, or with friends, in the great outdoors. Organic Methods: We are devoted to the Back to Eden Method mulching with straw or wood chips. We do not use any chemical fertilizers, only cow, horse or chicken manure and our own compost. Certifications: We buy certified organic seeds and grow organically. Because we do not sell our produce we have not bothered to become certified organic. Current Projects: -Weeding/Spot Weeding: We are busy with weeding throughout most of the growing season. Since we do not use chemicals we manually cut the weeds with sheers/hand cutters. -Trail Building and Maintenance: Similarly we manually clear paths using weed wackers and other tools. -Repairing Structures: We will structurally securing a wall adjacent to our garden. -Seeding/Planting: We will be planting seeds and seedlings to kick off the garden season.

My stay at Julia's place felt like magic.. I felt like I was living in "Practical Magic" (if you know that movie, you know the vibe ;) ). The days were filled with so much laughter and dance, singing, moving your body and real work - a good balance for my body & brain. I felt almost an instant connection with Julia - she laughed and cried with me, we worked hard together and then relaxed together. I took care of the garden, made a mushroom bed, learned more about permaculture and then relaxed in the sauna, swam in the waterfall and rolled around on the ground. Wherever I went, I always felt a little bit embarrassed and afraid to express myself to the extent to which I wanted to express myself but here...? I would start humming and Julia joined, I would squeal and laugh, and she would too. I never felt more free to sing and dance and just... BE. It takes a certain type of courage and vulnerability to really be how you want to be - without masks and old stories, to show up and truly take care of the land and the property. But if you dare... then you are in for a wonderful ride. So thankful for the most gorgeous, eerie, mysterious week of my life - where I was not only welcomed to the property but also a retreat that was held here! I came here alone but left with a group of wonderful people, friendships and connections.

This was my first WWOOFing experience. Unfortunately, it was not a good fit for me, and I left after 2 weeks of my planned 1 month stay. Julia is knowledgeable about homesteading and sustainable gardening, and I learned practical skills during my stay. I also had positive interactions with Ian and appreciated our conversations. However, the experience was more isolating and labor intensive than I expected. I anticipated other WWOOFers being present, but ended up working alone. The majority of my work was repetitive restorative weeding, which was not fulfilling. Dinner was also often very late (10:30pm+), and Julia’s management style involved very specific expectations around how tasks should be completed. A few interactions impacted my experience. I was uncomfortable hearing Julia speak negatively about previous volunteers, including mocking their accents and English comprehension. On my final day, after 4 hours of harvesting and heavy weeding, I asked to finish early and be dropped at the bus stop. The conversation became tense, and Julia told me, “You’ve been cutting corners this whole time.” This was surprising and hurtful as I had worked hard throughout my stay and had not previously been told she was dissatisfied. When I asked again to finish early Julia said, “Well, I’m the one that’s dropping you.” As I was dependent on transport from a remote property, I felt trapped. Tips: clarify the exact work beforehand, come with other wwoofers, have your own transport.

Mehdia joined us for a planned 1-month stay but left after 2 weeks. This year we host one WWOOFer at a time, so her abrupt departure displaced our expected support. As with all 1st timers, we offered patience & a gentle intro to homestead life. We've hosted 20+ WWOOFers over 2yrs with consistently positive reviews. She was withdrawn from the start. We take turns making dinner, but she showed little interest, retreating to her room at dinnertime & cooking just one meal in 2 weeks. Inexperienced (which we welcomed), she worked far slower than any WWOOFer we've hosted. Jobs that take 1hr took her closer to 6, despite stressing in her interview how much she loves to work. Off-hours she napped, read, and sunbathed, rarely engaging with us. We let her be & asked nothing more, but began to wonder if she was happy WWOOFing. One day she announced she'd found an apartment & was leaving. We agreed to a final workday & a ride to the bus. That day was the low point: harvesting garlic, she took repeated breaks, then halfway through declared she was "done." I said fine & asked her to tidy the tools & her room. She became agitated, questioning why cleanup was her job — then slammed doors & stomped through the house, making me uncomfortable in my own home. She demanded to leave 3hrs early; when I said I'd drive her at the agreed time, she left on foot. We wish her well, but in fairness to future hosts, this wasn't the respectful, cooperative exchange we've shared with many other WWOOFERS.

Thank you Julia and Ian for a wonderful stay and welcoming me into your beautiful home. I will miss the great food and conversation we had and the time spent will be well remembered. I will also miss Honeybrown and Ziggy! Unfortunately I won't miss Bernie the rooster 😆. All the best for your future endeavours ❤

I'm grateful for this being my first wwoofing experience. I stayed for two weeks, learned so much about myself and others, had some unforgettable experiences and overall had a great time. Julia and Ian are amazing hosts and helped me understand myself better. The other two wwoofers, Colleen and Judith were amazing to be around and work with and I'm happy to have had some real conversations with them. Honeybrown (the dog), berney (the rooster), and the kittycats were also awesome! Wishing everyone peace, love, joy, and success!

This wwoofing experience was amazing! Ian and Julia hosted me very spontaneously and even picked me up from the middle of nowhere when I needed help. They made you feel a part of the family, in between all the wonderful animals (especially the 4 kittens and the rooster who is a needing showman). You had dinner together and could help to cook. You could use the bathroom and shower whenever you needed to. They introduced the other wwoofer and me in a lot of new activities like yoga, using your voice, defending yourself, wrestling, canoeing and more... The projects in the garden are various from weeding and mowing lawns to setting up a new garden. You could always see your own afford afterwards. Usually, you got the plan in the mornings. If you weren't finished by the end of the 6 hours day, you could finish it the next day. They never yelled at you for doing something not well enough or wrong. You were very free and independent during the tasks, usually you could do your own way. The time when you start and when you have break(s) was independent, too. You could have them when you needed them. At the end of a project and usually also the day your help got appreciated
