We live in a charming old farmhouse on a few acres overlooking Cobequid Bay in Nova Scotia—home to the highest tides in the world. Here, in this stunning part of Glooscap Country, traditional territory of the Mi’kmaq known as Mi’kma’ki, our intergenerational family has long loved welcoming people from near and far. As we head into our fourth season of hosting WWOOFers, we’re more excited than ever to share this land, our knowledge, and our home. Since Grandma Diane passed in the spring of 2024, we’ve become a family of three, but we know she would want us to continue opening our home and hearts to others.
So who makes up our trio?
There’s lively Grandpa/Dad, Russell, always eager to teach carpentry, gardening, and art. He's also a vibrant 80 something (acts like he's 30), who goes to the gym 3 days a week, and enjoys learning all the new health trends. Me, Amber, a forty-something daughter of Russell and Diane, who works at the agriculture campus of the local university and loves to share culinary experiments and spirited conversations about the world. And then there is Alba, my bright and curious tweenage child. Oh and, Jasper, our very beloved dog.
All our gardens are organic, mostly no-till, and guided by permaculture principles. We’re happy to share our knowledge—gardening, wild herbs, foraging when time allows, food preservation, baking, and harvesting and cooking with the abundance of fruit and plants that grow here. But it’s a big piece of land, still being tamed and tended, and that’s why we welcome helping hands.
Projects for 2026 include:
• Digging and planting trees
• Planting flowers and vegetables
• Harvesting and preserving
• Making plenty of delicious treats
• Adding to our glamping tent
• Revamping the old chicken house
• Painting the house
• Ongoing garden maintenance
(weeding, etc.)—perfect for anyone who prefers lighter tasks
We appreciate every bit of help. Everyone’s contribution is valued.
Work outside usually begins after breakfast and varies by project: preparing soil, hauling compost by trailer, building up the hügel garden, trimming and grafting fruit trees, weeding, harvesting, and more. After work, the rest of the day is for adventure—beaches, lakes, villages, trails—whatever people feel like exploring. We’re fully organic, though not certified, since we don’t sell our produce unless the blackberries take over!
There are countless places to swim and hike nearby. We’re within walking distance of the bay—Jasper will happily guide you—and our “sleepy” little village holds plenty of surprises: four quirky antique shops, a Syrian café an event space, a local corner store, and even a wellness centre offering massage and yoga.
In our downtime, Russell, ever the artist, may share some techniques or take you canoeing. I’m always up for a walk, yoga, cooking a good meal, or taking folks into town—or even to Halifax—for a day trip. Alba loves to play and make new friends. We also enjoy card games and movie nights in the evenings, road trips around Nova Scotia, including visits to the cheese farm and animal sanctuary up the bay, hikes in Victoria Park or trips to the Farmers Market.
We’re looking for people who believe that love and respect are essential ingredients for living well. None of us are perfect—we’re all learning. Our relationships with the earth, animals, and one another are constantly growing and evolving. It’s the journey that matters. Come share yours with us, and we’ll do our best to welcome you, wherever your path has led you so far.
Our only requirements are honesty, kindness, and a willingness to join in the work and the play. We look forward to getting to know you.
